Getting started

Install SharpShooter Gold Field

Download the ZIP from the Download page, right-click it and choose Extract All. Keep everything inside the SharpShooter Gold folder together: the program, its runtime and the guides. Open SharpShooter Gold.exe. If Windows SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC", choose More info, then Run anyway. Nothing else to install - no Java runtime, no other software.#

Slide recommendations are advisory

Every slide recommendation - the slide call, metres to slide, the toolface, the dogleg needed, build and turn rates, motor output, slide or rotate, the projection to the bit or a target and rotary steerable settings - is an estimate to help the directional driller, whether it comes from the program, the phone app, the client portal or Pneuma. It is never an order or an instruction: whether, where, how far and at what toolface to slide is the directional driller's and the operator's decision alone, and they are responsible for each steering decision. Check each recommendation against the directional plan and the anti-collision rules first. The licence agreement says so in section 4.3 (version 2026-09-26.2); each copy asks for it to be accepted once more after the update.#

Enter the licence key

Customer copies are activated per computer. The program shows a computer code the first time it opens; send that code to SSDrillingtech@gmail.com and enter the key you get back. Moving to another computer needs a new key for that computer.#

Demo copies and expiry

The demo is SharpShooter Gold AI: the full program with Pneuma, the AI assistant. It runs until the date built into its ZIP - normally about 60 days from when that ZIP was made - and starts with a fictional sample well. The exact date is in DEMO END DATE.txt in the folder and in the email that sent you the link. Reinstalling does not extend it. Saved jobs stay on the computer after expiry; ask us about activation or an extension.#

Internet time checks

Customer and demo copies verify the time over the internet at startup and about every six hours while open. Without internet they still start for up to 12 hours after the last successful check on that computer. A program that is open stays usable offline for up to 48 hours from the last check.#

Find help inside the program

Open the three-dot menu at the top-left of the sidebar and choose Help. Type a question and choose Find help; the matching page of the Setup and Use guide opens. View setup PDF opens the whole guide, and Online help & support opens this page in your browser with your question already searched.#

Read the full guides

The Setup and Use guide, the Rig data feed (WITS) guide, the Office guide and the IPM guide (all PDF) are at the top of this page and in the Support / Guides folder of the download. The phone app guide is on the Phone app page.#

Update to a new release

From the 23 September 2026 release on, SharpShooter updates itself: it looks on sharpshootergold.com a minute after it opens and every 12 hours, and asks first. Install update adds the new program files beside the old ones - your jobs, your settings and everything it has learned stay exactly as they are - and Restart now opens the new version. Later waits a day; Skip this version waits for the next one. File > Check for updates looks straight away and turns the automatic check on or off. Only updates signed by SharpShooter are taken, and nothing happens without internet. An older copy, or one kept under Program Files, is updated the old way: download the new package and extract it over the old folder - your jobs are kept. Latest-changes.txt says what is new.#

Set up a job from start to finish

In this order: File > Create new database (or Open database for an export from other directional software); File > New job > Upload well plan PDF (or Enter manually), and check the identity, units, north reference, elevations, stations and targets; Job settings - north reference with declination, convergence, dip and field strength, Ground MSL, KB and the vertical-section azimuth; the BHA page - New BHA or Import from PDF, and check the bit to sensor; the Survey sheet - the tie-in row (bit depth or MD, INC, AZ, TVD, N/S, E/W), then the surveys and the tally; targets and tops (Import tops or targets, or Load plan annotations as targets); Offset wells and Real Time AC; Rig Data > Rig data feed (WITS) - serial cable from the rig, port on Automatic, keep-alive ticked, Start reading, then Auto-accept surveys and Auto-enter slides on the rig feed bar; Server > Phone slide sheet to sign the phone in with its QR code; then the steering set-up - mode, pace, TARGET, START and MOTOR. Ask Pneuma "how do I set up a job" for the full walk-through.#

Drop a file in or choose it

Every import - a BHA sheet, a plan, surveys, an EDR file, an AC report, a backup - opens a small window first: drag the file from File Explorer onto it, or press Choose file for the usual Windows window. It says which file types the import takes.#

North reference, grid and coordinates

A job is run in the grid its well plan is in. The north reference - magnetic, true or grid - is saved with the job, with the magnetic declination, grid convergence, magnetic dip and total field strength read from the plan or typed in Job settings. Survey and plan coordinates are never rotated or re-projected behind your back: what the plan says is what the sheet, the charts and the reports use. The satellite picture is the one place a datum conversion happens, and it only moves the picture, never a survey.#

Client portal

Create your company's account

Open sharpshootergold.com/portal and choose Create an account: your name, company, phone, work email and a password of 10 characters or more. A six-digit code arrives by email; enter it (or open the link in the email) and the company account opens. Colleagues join the same account through an invitation link from the Team section - ask them for one instead of creating a second company.#

See the licences your company holds

The Licences section lists every licence: the edition, whether it is free or in use, the computer code that holds it, who activated it and when, and the date it is paid through. The chips at the top count them: in use, free, total.#

Activate a computer on a company licence

Install SharpShooter Gold and copy the computer code from its activation window. Sign in at sharpshootergold.com/portal/activate, choose the edition and approve that computer. When the owner has signed the key, collect it on the same page and paste it into the program. New activations and renewal keys use this signed-in process; existing installed keys keep working. If no licence is free, order another on the portal or contact support. To move a licence, email SSDrillingtech@gmail.com.#

Ordering and quotes

Ordering and quotes, on the portal home page: ask for a quote, more computers or an invoice with the request form; it reaches us at once. When we have set up a price for your company it shows there, marked "your price", with an Order button that takes payment by card and puts the licence on your account straight away.#

Well data on the client portal

Off until an Office account of your company turns it on under Well data on the portal on the client portal home page and ticks that your company has the right to put the wells' data there and is responsible for who sees it. While it is on, your SharpShooter Gold copies send the open well whenever it changes - details, surveys, plan, targets, slides, rig activity, daily tickets and the KPI report - and only your company's Office accounts can open it: the well list, each well's page with the plan view and vertical section, and the surveys and slides as CSV. While it is on, Office accounts can also keep the company's Tool inventory and each well's Ticket prices on the portal; SharpShooter picks those changes up by itself and sends the rig's tool measurements and statuses back. In the program, Server > Client portal well data shows whether it is on, with Send now and Take this well off the portal; the chain-link button at the bottom right of the window is green LIVE while the well is going up and red NOT LIVE when it is not. Turning it off deletes the wells, tools and prices from the portal at once.#

Surveys, slides and plans through the website

While Well data on the portal is on, the rig's surveys and slides go to the office through sharpshootergold.com by themselves when they change, and the office takes each new set as a received revision (Active jobs) every 5 minutes - no Office Server needed. The office sends a plan with Send the plan through the website (Server > Client portal well data); the rig takes it into its plan library and asks whether to use it. For a well the office set up first, the rig picks it under Well on the website. The rig's WITS traces go the same way for the office's EDR traces. The last 5 versions of each well's surveys and plan and 90 days of traces are kept. When the website cannot be reached, a computer signed in to your Office Server uses it as before. Raw survey readings, MSA rows and survey check grades never go.#

The Office Server keeps a copy of the portal

With an Office Server, its Client portal backup tab keeps the company's own copy of the portal: the wells (the last 10 copies of each, locked with the server's key), the tool inventory and the ticket price lists, checked every 15 minutes with the server's licence. If the website is ever down, Office and Field computers signed in to the server get the tools and ticket prices from it, and their changes go on to the website when it is back - the chain-link button at the bottom of the program shows orange SERVER then. Well data on the portal has to be on, and the Office Server's licence on the company's portal.#

Your data and the company data agreement

What SharpShooter Gold and Pneuma learn stays within your own system: each computer keeps its own learned motor data, and Pneuma keeps each person's learned answers in their own account. Nothing is shared with, or used for, another company or user. On the client portal home page, under Your data, anyone on the company account can turn on the company data agreement: the company's licensed copies then share their learned motor data with each other, and Pneuma uses the answers learned for the company's people for its other people - inside the company only. End it or delete the company's data there at any time.#

Forgotten password

On the sign-in page choose Forgotten your password? and enter the account email. A link to set a new password arrives by email and works for two hours. Changing the password signs out every other browser and phone.#

Database and jobs

Create, open and back up a database

The three-dot menu has Create new database, Open database, Back up database, New job and Delete job. Automatic backups run every 15 minutes while the program is open and keep the latest 10; Job settings has Back up now and Restore automatic backup. Back up before updating or moving computers.#

Start a new job from a well-plan PDF

Choose New job, then Upload well plan PDF or Enter manually. A text-based plan PDF supplies the well name, job number, client, location, north reference, magnetic information and KB defaults. Check the identity, units, reference, elevations, stations and targets before saving. Scanned PDFs need manual entry.#

Import a database from another program

Open database also accepts supported exports from other directional software; an import review lets you pick the well, plans and offsets, then saves a new SharpShooter database. A pad database lists every wellbore, offsets included: the review offers the well being drilled first - the one the file marks Active, then the pad wells with their own plans - with its principal plan as the primary plan. If the well you choose has no plan in the file, the review says so; it is probably an offset. Depths come in to the centimetre, the offsets show on the charts and in anti-collision straight away, and a well whose casing list is empty gets no hole-size allowance - the same as the program it came from. A magnetic field saved in gauss or microtesla is read as nanotesla, and the review lists the wells it corrected. A COMPASS EDM export also brings the targets it keeps for the well and its plans, and the plan's formation tops.#

Update a job from a newer well database file

File > Update this job from a well database file reads the office's newer export into the job on screen: the plans in the file replace those of the same name (its primary plan becomes active) and the offsets that came from a well database are replaced with their AC setup. Surveys, slides, BHAs, the tally, the activity, the job's north, KB and magnetic settings, offsets added by hand and typed hole sizes all stay as they are. A file in another north reference, or one that puts the well somewhere else, is refused and nothing changes.#

Job settings: north reference, KB and elevations

Job settings holds the well identity, units, vertical-section azimuth, rig and crew names. Ground MSL is the ground elevation, KB is the height above ground, Total KB is the sum. Subsea TVD equals Total KB minus TVD. Survey azimuths and toolfaces are used exactly as entered; declination and convergence are reference information only.#

Targets from a plan PDF

A plan PDF brings its targets from the Design Targets table with their full names, the heel included. When the plan only lists its targets as annotations, tick Load plan annotations as targets on the import: each annotation becomes a target at its own MD, TVD and position, named by its comment. Targets... on Formations & targets offers the same, with the annotations unticked when the plan has named targets.#

Survey sheet

Enter the tie-in and the next survey

Enter Bit Depth, INC, AZI and the tie-in TVD (and N/S, E/W when needed). C.L. adds a course length after the previous bit depth; Bit Depth accepts an absolute depth. A row is a tally entry until both INC and AZI are in. Set the active BHA and its bit-to-sensor length before entering new depths.#

Scroll to the bottom of the table

The mouse wheel never stops on the survey sheet: working in the table the rows scroll first and the page takes over at the end, and the other way round, until the last surveys and the blank entry rows under them are on the screen with the black header at the top. Hide controls gives the table more room.#

A cell turned red

A red cell means the value was not saved. Read the status message at the bottom, or hover over the cell, for the reason. Undo restores an accepted edit. Fix red cells before relying on the numbers.#

A cell will not take typing

Click a cell that cannot be typed in and the status line at the bottom says why: a row that only carries a slide running on from the row above takes the slide's own cells (From, To, m, T/F, note) - its survey values go on a row with a bit depth or the blank row at the bottom; the first row's C.L. comes from the tie-in survey; TVD, N/S and E/W are typed on the tie-in survey only; a build or turn override needs a finished survey on its row.#

A survey that cannot be right

When a survey makes a dogleg of more than 45 (per 30 m, or 100 ft on a feet job) from the one before - more than any motor makes - the sheet warns: the status line says "Check the survey at ..." with the INC and AZ before and after, and a window asks OK - keep it or Fix it. Most often it is a typing error, such as an AZ typed 168 for 268: fix the INC or AZ and everything is worked out again. If the dogleg is real, OK keeps it as it is and it counts like any other survey. Until it is fixed or OKed its MDLS is left out of the MDLS average, the motor output seen and what the program learns. An MDLS more than twice the current value (the middle of the BHA's last four readings, never taken as less than 10 per 30 m) is a slide mostly seen on the survey before, with a small part carried over: it still shows on its row but is left out of the MDLS average, Current MDLS and what the program learns. A survey from the rig feed that bends that much waits for your OK before it goes on.#

Copy, paste, insert and hide columns

Right-click the sheet for Copy, Paste, Insert row and Delete selected row (Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V work too). Slides pasted over a slide already on the sheet win: that slide is cut back to make room (split either side, or taken off when they cover all of it) and the status line says so - Undo puts it back. Surveys pasted on a blank row, or on a row that has depths but no survey yet (a missed survey, future depths), go where their depth belongs: on that row when the depth fits there, on the row that already has that depth (its INC and AZ are updated), or inserted in order - the status line says which. Double-click an optional column heading to hide it; Columns brings it back. Hide controls gives the sheet more room; Table zoom and Fit columns fit it to the window.#

Retype an old survey depth

Type over a survey's Bit Depth or Survey Depth and a slide that started at that depth moves with it and keeps its length - the status line says where it went, and Undo (Ctrl+Z) takes the depth and the slide back together. Moving the depth deeper past where a slide started moves that slide too, so it stays after its survey. When Carry down moves the rows below, the slides below go with them. A slide moved to a new start keeps its length but never runs past the end of its course: its end is cut back at the next survey or tally depth, so a slide is never longer than the C.L. A slide that would run into the next one stays where it is and the status line says so. A red slide end means the slide runs past the next survey or tally depth: it started before its survey, so it sits in the course before - type the survey's bit depth in its From and the whole slide moves there with its length.#

Delete future tally depths

Future depths (a pipe tally entered ahead of the bit) come off the sheet two ways: select their rows and right-click > Delete selected row, or select their Bit Depth cells and press Delete - a future depth with no INC or AZ is taken off; one with an angle typed keeps its row and waits for the depth again. Undo (Ctrl+Z) puts them back. The phone lists future depths on its Tally sheet only, never as empty surveys, and deleting one on the phone tidies it away on the computer too.#

Carry a depth change down, or just this one

Type a new Bit Depth, Survey Depth or C.L. on a survey or tally row that has rows below it and the sheet asks first. Carry down: every survey, tally depth and slide below moves the same amount, so every course keeps its length. Just this one: only this station moves - its C.L. and the next station's C.L. change, and every depth below stays where it is. A change that passes the next row can only carry down (or Cancel). Undo (Ctrl+Z) takes it back. The last row, depths pasted in and depths sent from the phone do not ask.#

Cleared cells back to fresh

A cleared cell shows empty, never 0, and nothing in it is used. A future depth whose depth is cleared (with no INC or AZ) and a slide with its From, To and Length all cleared have nothing left in them: the sheet takes those rows off the next time the job opens, and the status line says how many. Ask Pneuma "fix the cell issues" or "clean up the empty rows" to do it straight away - she says what she would take off and does it after you say yes (Undo puts them back). A red cell means the value was not saved: the line at the bottom of the window says why.#

Multi-laterals and BHA sections

Multi-lateral, beside Delete BHA, asks for a tie-in depth inside the completed surveys and starts a new section there. Laterals keep separate surveys and slides even when depths overlap; check the BHA/Section selector before importing or editing.#

Insert a BHA before the planned one

Entered the next BHA ahead of time but another has to run first? On the BHA page pick the newest BHA in SECTION and press Insert BHA: give the section, bit to sensor and hole size and choose the assembly, or Import BHA sheet in the same window. The inserted BHA takes the planned one's name and place (BHA 3) with anything already recorded on it; the planned one moves up to the next number (BHA 4) with its own assembly, bit to sensor and hole size.#

BHA sheets: bit to bend, kick pad, serial numbers, open and print

Import from PDF on the BHA page reads the bit to bend however the sheet writes it (1 or 1.28), sizes the motor by its largest outside diameter - the kick pad (Pad OD) when the sheet gives one - keeps the motor, bit and component serial numbers for the record (the learning never uses them), and keeps the sheet itself: Open / print BHA sheet opens it in the PDF viewer to print. An assembly typed in prints a sheet drawn from the BHA page.#

Section picks the BHA

SECTION on the survey sheet picks the BHA - each section is a BHA run with its own bit to sensor, tie-in and sheet; the chips say the bit to sensor and the assembly running; Multi-lateral is the one button. New BHA (adds a section), Edit BHA, Delete BHA and the assembly a section ran (Run this on ...) are on the BHA page.#

To plan column

The To plan column, before N/S, is each survey's distance to the plan chosen beside DISTANCE TO PLAN (Original plan or Geosteering) at the survey's own measured depth. Blank where the plan does not reach that depth.#

Play with the slide ahead

Type the next slide in ahead of the latest survey - from, to and T/F - and INC, AZI and TVD at bit show what the bit will read at the end of it, so you can change the numbers and see what you are going to get before you slide. Under the toolface crossover (near vertical) a plain number in T/F is a magnetic toolface, 213 meaning 213Mag, the way the recommendation reads it; above the crossover a plain number is a gravity toolface. HS, LS, 30L and 213Mag are read as written. When the estimate cannot be worked out, the steering origin line says why.#

Slides and steering

Record a slide and read the next recommendation

Enter slide start and end (or slide length) and toolface on the Survey sheet. Choose the steering mode, start point, motor output and course; the primary plan or geosteering copy is the reference path. The call sits in one card under the set-up: the slide length and the toolface in the two dark tiles (click either to enter that slide on the newest survey), the full slide line under them, and the reason in a banner - grey for a note, amber when the call is stepped up, red when the forecast leaves the window or a lens is found. Recheck after every measured survey: projections are forecasts, not surveys.#

Multi-dogleg: landing long

When the motor output cannot land the two doglegs on the target as entered, the card says why and how it lands instead: at the target point with the MD it takes, or long - further along the target line, keeping the target's TVD, INC and AZ - with the distance and the doglegs. Nothing is used until you press OK - land long (orange) for that target; the sheet, the charts and the phone then show it, marked LANDS LONG. A landing is never looked for past 1,000 m along the line, and it never builds far past the target inclination to come back to it. A recommended toolface that rounds to 0 reads HS, and 180 reads LS.#

Multi-dogleg target

The two result cards show each required DLS, METERS TO SLIDE (the recommended slide for the next course in that dogleg with the MOTOR output chosen on the sheet, in a blue tile - click it to put the slide on the slide sheet), starting toolface and MD; START DOGLEG 2 AT MD marks the change to the second curve. Show projection in 3D draws the whole two-arc path; Focus projection is on the 2D charts too.#

Geosteering targets and formations

Open Geosteering and use Geosteering target with the start and target MD/TVD. Interpolate looks up an MD on the geosteering path. Job settings > Edit formations and tops holds formation names and tops; Show formations draws them in 3D.#

The call holds still through a slide

Once the rig feed shows a slide under way, the slide call stays as it was when the slide began, and the sheet says since when. A short pick-up to put the toolface back is part of the same slide. The slide goes on the sheet once it is over - rotating on bottom again, a connection (off bottom more than 2 minutes), a trip, rig service, the feed lost, or more than 5 minutes circulating or waiting - and the call is worked out again then, with the readings taken during the slide.#

Motor output: where the number comes from

MOTOR on the survey sheet picks the motor output the call uses: Average · last 4 MDLS or Current MDLS from the surveys, Learned · this BHA from what the same set-up has done before, Continuous · last slide from the rig feed's continuous inclination across the last slide (survey to survey when the readings cannot say), Book value · BHA from the assembly's bend and stabiliser positions, or Manual MDLS typed in. The set-up card shows what the figure was taken from.#

The formation's rotary trend on the LEARNED line

With MOTOR on Learned - this BHA, the LEARNED line also says what the formation at the bit does on its own while rotating: the build and walk of the courses rotated the whole way and their usual swing, lowest to highest - for example builds 0.40 per 30 m, swinging -0.30 to 1.10, walks right 0.20, over 6 rotated courses. It then says whether the latest rotated course sat inside that swing. A build that comes back the next survey is the formation doing what it usually does, not news; the call itself does not change. The phone's Surveys sheet shows the same line.#

Why the call is harder or softer

After a survey sees a slide, the hole out to the bit is carried at the well's rotating tendency, not the slide's bend. The call steps up to Hard only when the last slide went the wrong way on the same side you want now; a slide set on a different toolface gets a one-line note instead. Only the next slide shows on the sheet; Review goal & forecast lists the rest.#

Squat on feed slides

To slide, the driller sets more weight down than when rotating - drag holds the pipe - and the extra weight squeezes the drill string shorter. The depth at surface keeps going while the bit has not moved, so a slide off the rig feed looks longer than what was slid. With the weight on bit on the rig feed, SharpShooter compares the weight while sliding with the weight rotating on bottom just before, works out that squeeze (the extra weight x the string length / the steel's stiffness x the drill pipe's steel area) and takes it off the slide's effective length; the slide's note says how much. Drag takes part of the extra weight before it gets far down the string, so a correction scales it - 50 % to start. Ask Pneuma "what's the squat", "set squat correction to 60%" or "drill pipe is 4.5 inch". Slides typed by hand are never changed.#

Max off plan

Steering settings > Max off plan (standard 2 degrees) is the most any aim may be off the plan INC and AZ. More than that off steps the call up to Aggressive, twice it to Hard. Raise it for a well that needs to come back harder, lower it for a gentler one.#

Slides near vertical

Near vertical, set slides on magnetic toolface (123Mag): the at-bit estimate bends the hole toward that azimuth, through vertical when it must, and only the part of the slide the survey has not seen yet is added. Under 5 degrees the hole past the last survey keeps the direction it was going, rather than a turn number that means nothing near vertical.#

Pneuma, the assistant

Pneuma works the survey sheet

In the program's Pneuma window Kinsley and Kane read and work the open well: "show me the last 10 surveys", "show the survey at 1650.25", "show the slides", "fix the slides" (a slide that runs past survey points is cut into one row per course), "change the survey at 1650.25 AZ to 142.5", "delete the slide at 1590", "show the targets", "add a target", "edit target Heel", "import BHA", "import the plan", "import targets", "import EDR", "show the BHAs", "switch to BHA 3", "add the next C.L. 13.67" (the next pipe length as a new row after the last one), "fix the cell issues" (cleared rows taken off), "what's the squat", "set squat correction to 60%" and "drill pipe is 4.5 inch". "Fix the slides" also moves a slide that starts just before its survey to start there, with its length, never past the next survey. Any change is shown first and made only after you say yes, as one change Undo takes back. She checks the survey, slide, BHA or threshold is still what she showed you before she changes it (if it changed meanwhile she says so and changes nothing), and her "Done" is what the sheet reads back afterwards. Imports and the target window open for you to finish. It all happens on the computer - nothing is sent (with Voice on, only the words of her answer go to our server to be read aloud, and nothing is kept).#

Meet Pneuma, the SharpShooter built-in AI

Pneuma answers directional drilling questions, works out the numbers with exact formulas, finds the answer in the SharpShooter library and asks for anything it is missing. It runs on SharpShooter Gold's own server - no outside AI company sees your questions. Use it on the website (sharpshootergold.com/pneuma, or Pneuma in the client portal menu), as its own app, or inside SharpShooter Gold (the star on the survey sheet, the menu, or Ask Pneuma in Help). Free until 26 September 2028 - on the website no account is needed; in the programs it comes with SharpShooter Gold AI and is an add-on for the other editions. It is an AI and can make mistakes - check the numbers; the directional driller decides.#

Calculations Pneuma does

Pneuma works directional drilling numbers with exact formulas, not guesses: the sail angle for a TVD change ("what is my sail angle to drop 2 m of TVD over 100 m" - 88.85 degrees), the DLS to land the curve, slide length for a dogleg at a motor yield, the toolface for a new inclination and azimuth, build and turn from a toolface, motor yield, minimum curvature between two surveys, projections, the build section, TVD over a hold, closure and vertical section, north references. Also bit hydraulics, annular velocity, hydrostatic pressure, kill mud weight and ECD, buoyancy, MSE, free point, pump output, capacities and volumes, the motor's speed, bit speed and torque, a jar's pump-open force, unit conversions and general math. For MWD: a survey from the six raw sensor readings with its field checks ("raw survey gx ... bz ... total field 56500 dip 73.5"), mud pump noise frequencies, EM signal reach (skin depth), mud pulse travel time, data words ("decode 12 bit inclination word 011000110010 over 0 to 180"), frame times, and pulse positions decoded by hand ("decode pulse gaps 1.75, 1.00, 2.50, 1.50 with a 1.0 s minimum gap and 0.25 s slots, 3 bits each"). When a number is missing it shows a form with the numbers it found filled in; All calculators lists every one.#

Pneuma checks the job set-up

In the program ask Pneuma "set the job up", "what's missing in the job" or "is the job set up": she reads the open job and says what is still needed to steer (the north reference, the well plan, the BHA with its bit-to-sensor, the tie-in survey), what is worth adding (client, rig and job number, location, magnetic dip and field, KB and ground elevations, targets, formation tops, offset wells, casing, the rig feed) and what is done - with where to put each right. Say "import the plan", "import BHA", "import targets", "import tops" or "add a target" and she opens it. Nothing is changed by the check.#

Talk to Pneuma and hear the answer

Kinsley and Kane read their answers aloud in their own voices, made on SharpShooter Gold's own server - Kinsley warm, Kane deep and gritty, both American - on the website, in the app and in the SharpShooter program (Voice at the top switches it off and on; Read aloud under an answer plays it again). On the website and in the program the first words come in a few seconds and the rest follows while it plays; a line under the chat (in the program, the line at the bottom of her window) says when the voice is getting ready or reading, and says why if it cannot play - the website too slow, or the computer's sound not taking it (check the speakers or headset are on and chosen in the Windows sound settings). Answers she works out on the computer itself - the surveys, the slides, the call, the rig feed - are read aloud too: only the words of the answer go to SharpShooter Gold's server to make the sound, and nothing is kept there. The phone voices (only used when her own voice is not there) are American, Canadian or Australian. Press the microphone beside the question box and speak; your browser (or Windows voice typing in the program) turns it into text. The first time, allow the microphone when the browser asks.#

Your chats, and stopping an answer

Signed in, your chats are listed on the left of the Pneuma page (the three-line button on a phone) - today, yesterday, this week and older. Only you see them. Open one to read it or carry on; the x beside a chat deletes it. Pneuma calls you by your first name. Ask something new while she is still writing and she stops the old answer and takes the new one; Stop (where Send is) stops her too.#

Pneuma reads the open well in the program

In the SharpShooter program tick Use this well and Pneuma takes what your question leaves out from the open well: "what's my motor yield" gives the sheet's motor output for the last course first, with the plain sum from its dogleg and metres slid under it; "how long do I slide" gives the call. "What's the call", "how far off plan am I", "where's the bit" and "last survey" are answered from the sheet. It never sends the job name, client, rig or location.#

Quick or explained answers

Quick answers gives the number first in a sentence or two. Explained answers adds the formula and the numbers it worked with. Show the working under any calculation switches between them.#

Free for two years, SharpShooter Gold AI and the add-on

Pneuma on the website and as its own app is free until 26 September 2028 - no account needed and no daily limit; a free SharpShooter Gold account keeps your history. The SharpShooter Gold AI demo has Pneuma built in. In the licensed Field and Office programs, Pneuma is an add-on: everyone on the company account, and the company's licensed copies, can use it while it is on. Ask us to add it.#

Install Pneuma as its own app

On the Pneuma page in Chrome or Edge press Install app (or the browser menu > Install app; on some phones Add to home screen, then Install - not Create shortcut). A phone home-screen icon with a small Chrome logo on it is only a shortcut that opens Chrome: delete it and install again; if Chrome offers only a shortcut, open the Play Store once (signed in), update Chrome, restart the phone and try again. On an iPhone use Safari: Share, then Add to Home Screen. It opens in its own window from the Start menu, the desktop or the phone home screen - signing in and creating the account happen in that window too, and it comes back to Pneuma after the emailed code. The app asks you to create a free account or sign in the first time - Pneuma then knows your first name and keeps your chats - and to agree to the privacy notice once. It needs the internet to answer.#

Pneuma looks things up and reads web pages

When the library does not have it, Pneuma looks it up online in free sources - Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Stack Overflow for code and spreadsheet questions, and an index of research papers - and says where the answer came from, with the link. Only the topic words of your question go out, never names, wells or numbers. Paste a web address into your question and she reads that page or PDF for you ("read https://... - what does it say about survey intervals?", or "summarise https://..."); the address goes to that website, so never give her a private link. Pages behind a log-in and scanned PDFs she cannot read - copy the part you need into your question.#

The weather, live

Ask "weather in Grande Prairie", "forecast for Fort St. John tomorrow" or "weather in Williston, ND": Pneuma gives the conditions now, the forecast and any warnings, live from Environment and Climate Change Canada or the US National Weather Service, with the link. Give the town - with the province or state when the name is common; for a small place she uses the nearest Environment Canada forecast. Only the place name goes out, never your question. On the website, ask without a town ("what's the weather") and she uses your location by herself - your phone or browser asks you once to allow it, even when a town came up earlier in the chat ("and tomorrow?" stays with that town) - rounded to about 10 km for that one answer (in Canada it stays on our server); it is not kept. If the location is blocked or the phone's Location is off, she says so and how to turn it on. Canada and the United States only.#

The Bible, word for word

The whole Bible is on SharpShooter Gold's server - the World English Bible and the King James Version, both public domain. Ask for a verse or a chapter ("John 3:16", "Psalm 23", "Romans 8:28 KJV") and she reads it word for word; ask what the Bible says about something ("what does the Bible say about forgiveness") or to explain a passage and she answers with the verses under her answer. She respects people of every faith and none.#

What Pneuma studies by herself

About 200 articles a day from free-licence public sources, each kept with its source and licence: her own list of drilling, MWD, rig and computer topics, the oilfield categories on Wikipedia (drilling technology, oil wells, petroleum engineering and geology, well logging, surveying, hydraulics, safety), Wikipedia's Vital articles - its list of the most important topics in science, mathematics, technology, health, geography, history and everyday life - and Wikibooks textbooks (Python, VBA, SQL, calculus, statistics, physics, fluid mechanics, first aid). Nothing behind a log-in or a paywall, and never a company's private apps or data. What she has learned is searched in a full-text index, so answers stay quick however much she reads.#

How Pneuma learns

Pneuma learns every day. Tell her to remember something ("remember that our motors are 7/8 lobe") or correct her ("no, it's 3.5 m bit to bend", or Not right with the right answer in the note) and she keeps it for your later questions; answers you mark Helpful are used again too. Tell her what to do from now on - "from now on answer in imperial", "always give the slide metres first", "call me Kel" - and she follows it in every answer until you say "forget my instructions" ("what are my instructions" lists them); your instructions are yours only and never change her safety rules. What she learns from you stays in your own account - or inside your company with the company data agreement - and is never used for another company or user. She also learns general knowledge herself: the public articles she looks up for questions (Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Stack Overflow - never the question itself), topics she could not find (topic words only) and her daily study. Typos are fine: she corrects them and says "I think you meant ...".#

Pneuma's safety protocol

Pneuma stays away from anything that could hurt people - violence, weapons meant for people, explosives outside oilfield work, poisons, stalking and threats - and it is checked in code before a question reaches her and again on what she writes, so no setting, note or clever wording switches it off. Someone talking about hurting themselves gets a kind message with 9-8-8 (call or text, Canada and the US) and 911, and the conversation ends: she is not a counsellor, and the right help is a person. Someone saying they will hurt another person: the conversation ends, with 911 if anyone is in danger. Asking how to hurt people or make a weapon: she says no and carries on with anything else; three of those within the hour end the conversation too. An ended conversation stays ended for an hour on the website and in the program. Drilling words are not violence - killing a well, kill mud and kill sheets, shooting a survey or perforations are fine. Well-site safety comes first: she never helps bypass a safety system, alarm, well control, H2S or lock-out procedure; in SharpShooter she changes the survey sheet only after your yes and never runs rig equipment. Only the kind of stop and the time are kept for the owner's safety review - never the words of someone in crisis.#

Pneuma and your data

Before your first question Pneuma shows its privacy notice; it answers once you agree. Your questions and answers are kept encrypted in your own account and deleted after 12 months unless you marked them helpful; without an account they are kept with your browser's own code and deleted after 30 days. What Pneuma learns from them stays with you - or inside your company with the company data agreement - and is never shared with or used for another company or user. Delete your history, or your company's, on the client portal under Your data. The full notice: sharpshootergold.com/privacy#pneuma.#

Rig data

What the rig is doing, on the sheet

While the rig feed reads, a coloured tag beside "watching for the next survey" on the survey sheet's rig feed bar says what the rig is doing and for how long - Sliding (green on a gravity toolface, orange on magnetic, with the toolface), Rotating (blue), Connection (grey), Off bottom and the rest - the same as the Rig activity window.#

Rig data feed (WITS)

Rig Data > Rig data feed (WITS) connects the serial or network feed; Work out the mapping lines up which channel is which, and it works out the rig's units (daN or klb, kPa or psi) from the numbers - click a row's unit or code to change it. With rotary RPM mapped the slide sheet records slides itself, the Activity window fills in, and a rocked pipe still counts as a slide. Map torque and a toolface too, and the feed window shows what it read for each slide. The only thing sent to the rig is Pason's keep-alive - one "no value" packet (0111 = -9999) every 10 seconds, which a Pason EDR needs before it will send WITS; untick it for a port set to Send Only. On a serial cable (USB serial adapter) readings show the moment they arrive and Stop reading never waits. Nothing arriving? The status line counts the bytes: none at all usually means the rig end needs a null-modem cable or adapter, or its WITS output is not switched on for that port (an RS-422 port needs an RS-422 adapter); bytes but no records means the wrong speed - Find the cable tries every speed and leaves Bluetooth ports alone.#

Connection or slide

Rig activity tells drilling from a connection by the bit and the blocks, never the pumps: the bit picked up 0.3 m or more, or the string in the slips (blocks moving while the bit depth holds still), is a connection whatever the rotary does, and drilling starts again only with new hole. A pump reading that is missing or wrong changes nothing about drilling or sliding. New hole is the hole getting deeper, and a drilling line needs 0.2 m of it: slower than about 0.4 m/h reads as pauses. When the feed starts, a bit sitting still reads as off bottom until it drills. The rig's own slide seen figure counts as a slide sign unless you switch it off on the Settings tab. Thresholds... on the Activity window shows the numbers and what Auto learned.#

Pneuma watches the rig feed

In the program's Pneuma window ask Kinsley or Kane "watch my WITS feed". While the feed reads she learns this rig's own levels from its readings - the rotary RPM while sliding and while rotating, the flow and standpipe pressure with the pumps on and off, and how long its connections take - and every 5 minutes, once she has seen enough (about 5 minutes each of sliding, rotating, pumping and not pumping, and six connections), sets the sliding RPM, pumps on and longest connection in the Thresholds window (Auto off) and the pipe-rocking settings when they differ enough, saying each change. Ask "what's the rig doing" for the rig right now (activity, bit and hole depth, pumps, flow, standpipe, diff, rotary, WOB, ROP, toolface), "what did you change", "put the thresholds back" (the numbers from before she started) or "stop watching the feed". It all stays on the rig computer - the feed never goes to the website.#

Use your own channel for a measurement

On the Rig data feed window, Your own channels: Use the selected channel for a measurement (or Tie my channels to measurements by name) makes a SharpShooter measurement read your channel's code - your Ax for Raw Gx, your continuous inclination for MWD Continuous Inc - and keeps your name for it.#

Same activity in a row is one line; bit hours and circulation hours

Two or more lines of the same activity in a row in the Rig activity window - two Rotating lines split by a few seconds of something else - show as one line from the first start to the last end, with the drilling parameters beside it averaged over the whole of it. A connection is called Survey & connection. The top line gives Bit hours (the bit on bottom rotating, sliding, drilling or drilling cement) and Circulation hours (the pumps on) for the days shown, and the BHA page gives both for the run of the BHA picked in SECTION.#

Setting up the WITS connection (EDR, computer 1, computer 2)

The cables: the rig's EDR WITS port to a USB serial adapter on computer 1 (the rig computer), through a null-modem cable or adapter - a straight cable gives nothing - and for a second computer a null-modem serial cable (9-pin, female both ends) from a second port on computer 1's adapter (a 2- or 4-port USB serial adapter) to computer 2's own USB serial adapter. Pason's own ports are RS-422: a USB adapter goes through Pason's RS-232 converter box. Step 1: ask the rig's data hand to switch WITS Level 0 out on for that port - 9600, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit. Step 2: Windows Device Manager > Ports (COM & LPT) shows the adapter's COM port. Step 3: on computer 1 open the job, Rig Data > Rig data feed (WITS), choose Serial cable from the rig, leave the port on Automatic and Pason keep-alive ticked, and press Start reading - the state turns green and Heard on the wire counts; check the Measurements tab. It starts by itself when the job opens from then on. Step 4: on the Second computer tab tick Out of serial port and leave it on Automatic - it finds the port computer 2 is on by itself. Step 5: on computer 2 open the same job (Cross shift over the cable copies it over the same cable), Rig Data > Rig data feed (WITS), Serial cable from the rig, Automatic (or Find the cable), keep-alive ticked, Start reading. Step 6: both green, Value now moving on both. Computer 2 gets the feed only while computer 1 is reading, and nothing is sent to the EDR from computer 2. Nothing arriving: the WITS output not switched on for that port, a straight cable where a null-modem one is needed, the wrong COM port, or the speed (Automatic tries every speed).#

Two computers on one WITS port

The EDR usually has one WITS port, and a USB serial adapter does not split it by itself. On the computer on the EDR, the Rig data feed window's Second computer tab sends the feed on exactly as it came: out of another port of the USB serial adapter with a null-modem cable to the second computer, or sent to a computer on the rig network that waits with Let the rig connect to this computer (port 5000) - this computer connects out, so nothing here needs a firewall opening. Nothing is sent to the rig. The second computer gets the feed while the first one is reading.#

Every item the rig sends

Nothing to map or type: while the feed reads, every WITS item the rig sends is kept with the job against the time - tank volumes, pump strokes, casing pressure, gas, the rig's own activity code. Each is named from the standard WITS list (Tank volume (active), Pump stroke rate #1 ...) or by the measurement it is mapped to; Rename the selected item gives it your rig's name. A value is kept when it changes, one every 5 seconds at most and once a minute when it holds still. The values live in a file beside the database (name.db.traces), left out of the automatic backups because of their size. Untick Keep every item the rig sends on the Rig data feed window to stop it for a job.#

What was this stop?

When the bit has sat still with the rotary stopped for 30 minutes or more, a small window asks what it was - rig repair, cut and slip drilling line, test BOP or any of your company's codes - and puts it on the activity as a typed line over the feed's Rig service line. Leave keeps the feed's line. Not asked while the BHA is out of the hole. Untick Ask what a long stop was on the Rig data feed window to stop it for a job.#

EDR traces: pick the items to see

Traces... on the EDR traces toolbar lists every item the rig has sent - tick the ones to see. A ticked item takes a track of its own while there is room (8 tracks), then goes beside others, up to four to a track; untick to take it off; Standard puts the usual set back. Remembered on this computer. On the phone, the Traces sheet does the same with its own list (app 1.4.6 and up).#

EDR traces

Rig Data > EDR traces draws every item kept against the time like a rig EDR: tracks side by side, the newest at the bottom, up to four curves a track with their own scales, and the rig activity beside the clock. Hover for the values. Zoom in and Zoom out (or + and -, or Ctrl + wheel) halve or double the time shown, 1 minute to 30 days; type your own in Show (45 min, 3 h, 2 days); drag down the traces over a stretch to fill the screen with it; Show all puts the whole record on one screen. The wheel moves in time; Live follows the newest. Click a track's heading to add or take off curves or set a scale; Standard tracks puts back hook load and WOB, RPM and torque, pressures and flow, depths and ROP, pits and gas. Export (CSV) and Save picture. Imported EDR files fill it too. On the Office copy the rig's traces come through the website while Well data on the portal is on.#

Import an EDR file

No feed on the job, or a gap in it? Rig Data > Import EDR file reads the rig recorder's export - Pason, RigCLOUD, WellData, WITSML or a LAS time log, as CSV, text, Excel or LAS. Check the columns and units it found (anything marked "worked out - check it"), then Import. The file plays through the same rules as the live feed: the rig log, the Activity window and the slides. Times the feed already recorded are skipped, and slides you typed always win.#

Import corrected (MSA) surveys

Rig Data > Import corrected surveys (MSA) reads the file the MSA provider sends - CSV, text, Excel or LAS. It picks the corrected INC and AZ columns (not the raw ones, not the amount of correction), the depth unit and the north reference, and lines every station up with the sheet. A survey at the same depth takes the corrected angles; its MD, note and BHA stay. A deeper station goes on as a new survey on the active BHA. The tie-in, depths between surveys, and a file in a different north reference are shown but never applied. Tick what goes on and press Apply. Undo on the survey sheet takes it back.#

MSA from the tool's raw readings

Rig Data > MSA from raw readings works out a multi-station correction on your computer: import the MWD provider's raw export (MD, Gx, Gy, Gz, Bx, By, Bz), check the reference field (total field, dip, declination, convergence), and Work it out. It finds the tool's fixed magnetometer errors for the BHA run and each survey's corrected INC and AZ, says Good, Check before use or Refused with the reason, and Send to review puts the corrected surveys through the MSA review window - tick, Apply, Undo. Advisory: the provider's corrected survey stays the survey of record unless your company says otherwise.#

Torque and drag readings off the feed

With the rig feed reading, the pick up, slack off, rotating weight and off-bottom torque at every connection are found by themselves while the string is off bottom - the steady pull up, the steady lowering (not the drop into the slips), turning with the blocks still - and kept as a reading when the string is back on bottom, checked exactly like a typed one. The From column on the Torque & drag page says Rig feed or Typed; a tick turns it off.#

Rig activity: pick a day

The Show list on the Rig activity window is the well's days by their date, today at the top, and Whole well.#

Rosebud page: toolface, slide call and live AC

Rosebud on the left, under BHA: the rig feed's toolface on a rosebud like the phone's - the last readings as green dots, the newest outermost and biggest, the newest toolface written in the middle, the slide call's toolface as a gold wedge, the survey INC and AZ, the continuous INC and the rig's slide figure with the call in the corners - and beside it the survey sheet's slide recommendation and the live anti-collision picture (the AC light, the nearest offsets with SF and ellipse gap). When the rig sends no new toolface, the last one stays, faded, with its age.#

Toolface off bottom: the last one stays

Some rigs send the toolface, inclination and azimuth items only while making hole - nothing from the moment the bit comes off bottom until it is drilling again. The phone's Toolface sheet and the Rosebud page keep the last toolface the rig sent with how long ago it came in instead of going blank. The toolface used is the one the MWD is changing; when both gravity and magnetic change, or neither, under 5 degrees it is the magnetic one and above that the gravity one. To have toolfaces off bottom, ask the rig to send the survey record on time (every second).#

Cross shift over the cable

The null-modem cable between the two computers also carries the job, both ways. Open Cross shift over the cable (the three-dot menu, or the button on the Rig data feed window's Second computer tab) on both computers, press Send this job on the one with the job and Get the job on the other. The whole job copies across and is checked against a fingerprint at the far end; a line lost on the cable is sent again by itself, and the rig feed keeps flowing while it copies. At 115200 allow about a minute for every 400 KB (at 9600, a minute for every 33 KB) - the window says the size and the time to expect. The job arrives as a database of its own beside the current one and SharpShooter offers to open it; nothing runs from what comes over. Both computers need the 27 September 2026 build or later - the rig computer gives the second computer a turn to answer about every half second, and if nobody answers the window says so and the feed carries on - and the second computer never sends a byte until it has heard SharpShooter on the rig computer. When the other computer already has the well, Send the surveys and slides only takes seconds: the surveys, slides, BHAs and INC/AZ ahead rows it does not have are added to the same well open there, and nothing there is changed. The cable speed is automatic: for a handover both computers go to 115200 by themselves - twelve times quicker than 9600 - and back to 9600 when it is done, with nothing to set; if 115200 does not come through they go back to 9600 by themselves and carry on.#

Second computer: the port found by itself

Rig data feed > Second computer > Out of serial port: Automatic listens on every serial port but the rig cable's for a computer waiting for a feed (SharpShooter's Pason keep-alive) and sends out of the port it is heard on - never the rig cable, never a port sending real readings. The second computer reads with Serial cable from the rig, keep-alive on, at the same speed (9600 is the usual). The port found is tried first next time.#

Rig activity totals: hide and show

Hide totals, the pill button on the Rig activity window's legend line, folds the totals table away so the activity list takes the whole window; Show totals brings it back. SharpShooter remembers your choice on that computer.#

Rig activity by hand

Activity > Rig activity > Add activity types in what the rig did when the feed is down or read it wrong: pick the company code, the start and end time, the bit depths and a note. A typed line takes the place of the feed for its time; Edit on a feed line lays a typed line over it; Delete brings the feed back. The phone app Activity tab does the same from the rig floor.#

Surveys from the rig feed

Pason sends the last posted survey on the WITS feed (0708 depth, 0713 INC, 0715 AZ). When a new one settles, the slide sheet and the phone show it with Add to sheet and Dismiss. Add only puts on a new, deeper survey - it never changes a survey already on the sheet by itself. When the feed's survey at a depth already on the sheet has a different INC or AZ, the bar shows both, and Use the feed's (beside Dismiss) puts the feed's INC and AZ into that row - never the depth - as one change that Undo takes back; the phone app has the same button (1.4.9). A rig that sends a live depth on 0708 is recognised and nothing is offered. Tick Auto-accept surveys (on the survey sheet's rig feed bar, beside Add to sheet) and each new one goes on as it lands when it sits sensibly after the last - no more than 100 m on, no wild dogleg, not below the bit, not graded bad by the survey checks; anything else waits with the reason, and Undo takes one off. Slides have the same switch beside it: Auto-enter slides. It goes on only when it is the next station: the first tally row ahead, or one course on from the last survey when there is no tally - a survey two stations on (one was missed) or one that does not line up with the stations waits, the bar turns red and a small window says why, with OK - add it; the ones behind it wait too and carry on by themselves once it is added. Surveys go on whatever page the program is on. Every posted survey not on the sheet waits in line, shallowest first: with Auto-accept on each goes on one stand past the one before, up to the newest; off, the bar turns red when two or more are waiting and Add all puts them on in order. The at-bit forecast only runs through slides within 100 m of the last survey's bit - slides further on belong to surveys not on the sheet yet, and the sheet says so.#

Feed slides start at the survey

The rig's depth and the survey sheet's bit depth are measured apart and often differ by a metre or so. A slide off the rig feed that starts up to 2 m before a survey or tally depth - with most of it after that depth - goes on that survey's row: it starts at the survey's bit depth, keeps its whole length and never runs past the next survey. Its note keeps the depth where the feed saw it start. Nothing is left in the course before, so no row is pushed down. A piece an earlier version entered before the row is taken into the slide at the row on the next pass (the status line says so). A slide that starts further back, or is mostly before the row, is still cut at the row: that part really was slid in the course before.#

Continuous inclination from the rig feed

Map MWD Continuous Inc and MWD Continuous Azi on the Rig data feed window (0723 and 0724 on Pason), and an at-bit inclination if the assembly has one. SharpShooter keeps each new reading the MWD sends while the pumps are on, so what the well did between two surveys is not lost. START - Continuous INC starts the slide call from the newest trusted continuous INC with the last survey's AZ (At bit · continuous INC takes it on to the bit); the start is taken when a survey comes in and holds until the next one - survey to survey. While the sensor goes into a slide, the LATEST SURVEY row shows the motor output so far. MOTOR - Continuous · last slide reads the motor output off the readings across the last slide the sensor has passed, at the slide's own depths. Continuous INC, beside Real Time AC, draws the readings against depth with the surveys and slides. Readings that fluctuate are thrown out; when too many do, or they disagree with the surveys by more than a degree, none are used and the sheet goes back to survey to survey and says why.#

How the activity is worked out

On bottom making new hole is rotating or sliding. Within 40 m of bottom is a connection - circulating when the pumps run on past 20 minutes. More than 40 m off bottom with the pumps off is a trip, out or in, stops in the slips included; with the pumps on it is circulating or reaming, or still the trip in when the rotary is stopped (filling pipe). Back from a trip in nothing is a connection until drilling resumes - turning and going down to bottom is reaming / wash to bottom. After casing and before new hole, turning with the pumps on and going down is 2C Drilling cement. The bottom is the rig's own hole depth, so a pipe tally filled in ahead never makes drilling read as tripping. The BHA column shows the BHA in the hole on each line the feed writes. The bit sitting still with the rotary stopped for more than 10 minutes is rig service. Each line carries its IADC code from the full list (2S sliding, 6I tripping in, 20A connection and the rest), the formation the bit was in and the drilling parameters; click a line to change it, and Save beside the day picker writes the day down and sends it to the office.#

BHA laid down and picked up

With the rig feed on, SharpShooter writes both by itself - nobody has to be at the computer. Tripping out on a well drilled past 100 m (330 ft): once the bit is out of the hole, 6L Lay down BHA goes on from when the bit came under 100 m; when the bit starts back in, 6P Pick up BHA goes on until it is back past 100 m. Then it asks what went in: the new BHA, Running casing (12 Run casing and cement until the next BHA goes in, with the BHA column blank), Other (your own code) or Not a BHA change. On the way out under 100 m, the first time the blocks stand still for 5 minutes, 26 Safety meeting or drill goes on until they move again. When the string gets light and the rig's bit depth stops tracking, the depth is followed from the block height. After Running casing, circulate on bottom, cementing (rig pumps off, returns in the flow line) and nipple up BOP go on by themselves. Right-click a line and Insert row after this one puts an activity in between. Running in with the pumps on and the string turning is reaming. Thresholds... on the Activity window shows every number used - Auto, or untick it to change them. Without a feed, use BHA laid down... and BHA picked up... on the Activity window.#

Serial port on Automatic

On the Rig data feed window, leave the serial port on Automatic (the standard): SharpShooter listens on every port at each usual speed until one sends WITS, reads that one only, and searches again by itself when the cable is unplugged or the feed goes quiet for 30 seconds. The port it found is tried first next time. A job that was reading when SharpShooter closed starts reading again by itself when it opens; Stop reading turns that off.#

Your own WITS channels

Items the rig sends that SharpShooter has no row for can be added under Your own channels on the Rig data feed window: the four-digit WITS code, a name and the unit (for example 0725 MWD Continuous Gamma, API). Each shows its value live and is kept with the job with the bit depth - at most one reading every 5 seconds - and Export CSV gives them back as a spreadsheet. A code a standard row already reads is refused. They are shown and kept only, never used to steer.#

Raw survey readings for MSA

Map the rows Raw Gx, Gy, Gz, Bx, By and Bz (survey) on the Rig data feed window when the MWD sends its raw readings. Each survey posted on the feed with all six keeps them with the depth, INC, AZ and the BHA in the hole, ready for Rig Data > MSA from raw readings. They stay on this computer and are never sent to the client portal.#

Gamma trace

With gamma mapped, each new gamma value with the pumps on is kept against the depth of the gamma sensor (bit depth less the BHA's gamma-to-bit distance) and drawn under the continuous INC in the Continuous INC / AZ / Gamma window. It is shown and kept only for now.#

Windows beside the program

Activity, the rig feed, Real Time AC, 3D, Safety and the phone windows sit beside the program: click the slide sheet and it comes to the front. Drag them to a second screen and keep working.#

Phone app

The phone stays connected

The phone connection stays on while SharpShooter is open, even with the phone window closed. When the computer opens another job, the phone follows it: it is signed out and signs itself back in with its saved phone user, then shows the new job. If the connection was on when SharpShooter closed, it comes back on by itself the next time SharpShooter opens - nobody has to open the phone window or sign the phone in again. Stop phone connection turns it off until you start it again. A phone that signed in with the ten-minute code only (not remembered) needs the code again.#

Satellite ground on the phone chart

The phone chart shows the same satellite picture of the pad the computer does, under the well in Plan view and 3D, with a Satellite on/off button beside the view buttons. The computer sends only where the pad is; the phone fetches the picture straight from Mapbox and keeps it for 30 days (as long as Mapbox allows), so it draws with no signal in between. It needs the pad latitude and longitude on the well plan. Not shown in Vertical section, where a square of ground is only a line. Phone app 1.4.2 and up.#

Getting the phone app

The app is in early access on Google Play. On the phone open sharpshootergold.com/app (or sign up at sharpshootergold.com/tester): join the tester group, tap Become a tester, then install - nobody has to add you and updates arrive by themselves. If Play says the app is not available or Item not found, use the same Google account for every step - the round picture at the top right of the Google Play page and of the Play Store app shows which account is in use; tap it to switch - and give Google a few minutes after joining the group. The app only shows on Google Play to testers, so install it with the step 3 button on sharpshootergold.com/app (it opens the Google Play test page - tap download it on Google Play there), not by searching the store. No Google account on the phone, or Google Play will not install it? Download the app file (APK) at sharpshootergold.com/app#file. If you already run SharpShooter Gold the app is in your Field package, and on the computer under Server > Phone slide sheet, which installs it over the rig Wi-Fi with no internet. Android 8 or newer.#

Sign the phone in to the computer

On the computer open the job and Server > Phone slide sheet. On the phone open SharpShooter Gold and tap Scan the sign-in code, then point it at the QR code in that window. The phone stays signed in from then on. The computer can be on any page - the phone gets the sheet all the same (from the 26 Sep update; older computers make the phone say SIGNED IN - WAITING FOR THE COMPUTER until Survey sheet is open).#

The phone will not connect

"socket failed: EPERM" or "Permission denied": the phone blocked the app. Settings > Apps > SharpShooter Gold (older copies: SharpShooter Slide Sheet) > allow Wi-Fi, mobile data and background data; turn off an always-on VPN with "Block connections without VPN"; allow the app in any security app. "Connection not reachable": same Wi-Fi as the computer, computer awake with SharpShooter open and the phone connection started, Windows Firewall allowing SharpShooter, or use the SharpShooter Link code from anywhere. "The computer is not connected to SharpShooter Link": SharpShooter is closed on the computer, the phone connection was stopped, or Link is switched off in the Phone slide sheet window.#

Update the phone app

Install a newer copy the same way. Android keeps the app's data and only accepts an update signed with the same key as the installed app. Testers on Google Play get updates automatically.#

Charts

Top of well, smaller steps, the bit at the hole depth, dark charts

On the 3D view, Go to > Top of well turns the chart about the first survey. Up and Down move along the well a metre a press (a foot on a feet job), five with Shift. With START on At bit - continuous INC, the survey-to-bit stretch runs on to the hole depth the rig has drilled to and the red bit is drawn there. The follow view's distance box is in larger bold type. Every chart starts dark; Chart tools > Background > Light keeps one light.#

Vertical section: show formations

Show formations (Appearance) on the vertical section draws the plan's formation tops as named bands across the chart at their TVD, in the 3D view's colours.#

2D charts: vertical section and plan view

Vertical section shows the well in its VS direction, Plan view the horizontal view. Click the chart, then W / S (or + / -) zoom about the middle and A / D move it left and right - the same keys as the 3D view; the wheel zooms at the pointer, 4% a notch; drag, Shift-drag or right-drag moves it. The controls card in the top-left corner shows these; Hide folds it to a small Show controls tab that brings it back. The chart tools fold into the slim Chart tools strip above the chart so the chart gets the room: point at the strip and the toolbar - ZOOM, GO TO (Survey, Projection), DRAG (Pan, Measure, Clear), SCREEN - the Wells & paths table and the appearance settings drop down over the chart; go back to the chart and they fold away. Click the strip to keep them open. Well names appear when you hover near a path.#

3D view: rotate, tilt, follow

The chart turns about the survey selected on the sheet (or the latest), which stays put on screen: drag sideways to go round it and up or down to tilt - half a degree a pixel, up to straight down - and it stops the moment you let go. Shift-drag or right-drag moves the picture; the wheel, + / - or W / S move the camera toward the survey in small steps (4% a wheel notch, 1.5% a key press); A and D move sideways; zoomed in the background is black, zoomed out the pad picture and formations show. The controls card in the top-left corner shows the keys and the mouse; Hide on it, or Chart tools > Show controls, hides it, and the small Show controls tab left in the corner (or Show controls on the right-click menu) brings it back; right-click for Look down north up, Centre on the survey, Go to the top or bottom of the well, and Fit. The view is a narrow-lens perspective: close in, near wells (yours and the offsets) draw bigger and far ones smaller. Hold Ctrl and drag to rotate freely through any angle; Straighten view removes the roll. Follow as drilled keeps the camera on the well; The Up arrow moves up the path and Down moves down it (Shift for bigger steps), 1/2 changes the followed well; past the bit, Down carries on along the projection to the target (the detail line says Projection to target) instead of stopping at the bit. View from offers East, West, North, South, Vertical profile and Downhole. The chart tools fold into the slim Chart tools strip above the chart: point at it and they drop down over the chart - GO TO (Latest survey, Focus projection, Projection end), VIEW, DRAG (Rotate or Pan), SCREEN, the SHOW row for the paths, FOLLOW, and the appearance settings (background, lines, colours, floor, earth block, satellite view and rig); go back to the chart and they fold away, or click the strip to keep them open. The wells draw as lit pipe inside a block of layered rock. Full screen opens the chart in its own window for a second monitor.#

3D view: drill pipe and the survey-to-bit stretch

Drill pipe & BHA (Appearance, on as standard) draws the well as steel drill pipe and the survey-to-bit stretch as a pipe in the Survey to bit colour (Chart colours), with the red bit marker at the forecast bit depth. Widths are enlarged for visibility, as every line on the chart is, until you zoom in to true size (the BHA library's pipe size). Nothing about the depths or the calls changes; untick it for the plain blue and amber lines.#

3D view: casing at true size

Casing > Casing strings (the Casing menu at the top) lists the strings run: name, outside diameter, top and shoe depth, and the inside diameter when known; several strings and liners are fine. Show > Casing on the 3D chart draws each as a see-through steel shell at its true outside diameter along the surveyed path, with a ring at the shoe and its name and size beside it. Zoomed out, a string thinner than the drawn pipe shows as a faint sleeve round the pipe until you zoom in. The casing goes with the job to the office and the cross-shift computer; it does not change the AC hole sizes, the pressure page or the torque-and-drag shoe.#

Learning page: everything the motors have taught it

The Learning tab (under BHA) shows your own learning - never the results kept online. In Field, Learned on picks This job or All my jobs; an Office copy shows the company's own. The table: motor output, rotating build and walk, where the toolface lands, the slide grade, footage and wells - rolled up by assembly, formation and inclination band, and interval by interval. Filter by assembly, formation and area (within 25 km of the pad); Export CSV writes the rows to a spreadsheet file.#

Offset wells on the charts

The Offset wells selector is shared by the charts and the Survey sheet: search, pick wells, Show listed, Hide all or Show nearest 5. Nearest five ranks by centre distance along the plan and as-drilled paths; re-select after big changes.#

Updates

Could not check for updates: not signed

If a copy says the update notice is not signed by SharpShooter, the website is carrying a notice with an old signature; publishing the website again from the owner computer signs it. Nothing is wrong with the copy, and the latest full package is always at sharpshootergold.com/download.#

Operations

Operations menu

The Operations drop-down at the top holds the KPI report, the Tool inventory and Communication. The Casing drop-down holds the casing strings. Tickets keeps the daily ticket, the price list and the cost summary.#

Communication: morning reports, DD updates, tool orders, manifests

Operations > Communication (also a page on the left). Morning report and DD update are filled in from the sheet and the rig feed - bit depth, last survey, the BHA in the hole, what the rig is doing now, the last 24 hours of activity - and finished by hand. Order tools lists tool, quantity, size, needed by and a note. Shipping manifest ticks the tools marked Ready to ship, takes carrier, waybill, date and ship-to, lists each tool with its serial, size and measurements, and can mark them Shipped back. Send to office keeps a message with the well and sends it with the next survey send; Send now pushes it at once; Email opens your own mail program with the text; Copy and Save as text file too. The office sees them on its Communication page and marks them handled.#

Tool inventory by kind

The inventory is split into DD tools, MWD tools, Other tools, Drill bits, Tubulars and Mud motors: the Kind drop-down on the window shows one kind at a time or all of them. A standard item's kind comes from its type; the office picks the kind of its own types. Add other tool on a Field copy puts a tool of the rig's own on the well as an Other tool, On location; it goes to the office with the surveys.#

Rotary steerable jobs

Switch a job to rotary steerable

BENT MOTOR | RSS at the bottom of the sidebar is saved with the job. On a rotary steerable job the workspace turns blue, the slide columns leave the survey sheet, the slide calls become downlink calls, and the Downlinks and Pressure pages appear. A bent motor job is unchanged. The phone app follows the job.#

Not steering - back off

When the surveys since a downlink show under half the dogleg the setting should give, the call works down this order - common drilling practice; the tool hand's procedure for the tool comes first: check the readback, hydraulics, RPM toward 100, ROP and weight on bit, one step more setting, anti-jam, then bit or BHA.#

Hold modes (HIA)

The call card always shows the hold line - hold inclination and azimuth - with its code from the job's sheet, and Log HIA records it in one click. The commands list is grouped Steering, Hold modes (HIA) and Other. The phone app shows the same hold line.#

Pressure, torque and drag, BHA

Pressure drop at the pads

On a rotary steerable job the Pressure page opens with the pressure drop box: flow, mud weight, up to 10 nozzles, a flow restrictor, the bypass and the range the tool hand wants, every box with its unit beside it. The total turns green in range, yellow low and red high, and says which flow, nozzles or restrictor would bring it back. More inputs and the full standpipe breakdown - surface, string, motor, MWD, tool, bit, annulus, ECD and HSI - are folded underneath. Bent motor jobs have no Pressure page.#

Steering tool face gaps

Measure the gap between the ball and its sleeve on each of the three faces, upper and lower, and type them in millimetres with the ball diameter. The page shows what slips past the faces instead of going down to the bit, whether the tool is as new, part worn or worn out, and what the pads are pushing with against the same job on a fresh tool. Flow through a gap that thin goes with the cube of the gap, so twice the gap passes eight times the mud - which is how a tool with the right standpipe pressure still steers badly.#

Torque & drag page

Pick up, slack off, rotating and drilling hookload and torque down the hole, buckling, the friction factor the hole is actually running at (from the rig feed or typed readings), and - against the planned well - whether the string reaches total depth. Import mud report (PDF) fills the mud, hole, string and shoe.#

Learned motor output, shared across the company

Pick the section on the survey sheet and the assembly it ran (ASSEMBLY, beside SECTION at the top of the survey sheet). From then on every completed survey interval files what the motor did against the assembly's set-up - motor size, power section and bend, the bit, the flex and slick monels and the stabilisers; no serial numbers are kept, since the same motor comes back from the shop set up differently - with the inclination band, with the well's own rotating tendency taken out; with the rig feed on, the toolface grade and the weight, differential and flow it slid on are kept too. On the slide sheet choose MOTOR > Learned · this BHA: the line under it names the step that answered (this band, this formation, this BHA) and the footage behind it. With an Office Server, what each rig learns goes up with its surveys and the company's answer for the job's assemblies comes back with the AC setup - counted once, measurements only, no names, and it stays inside your company. Nothing it learns is shared with another company: each computer keeps its own, and with the company data agreement (client portal > Your data) the company's licensed copies share theirs with each other through our server - inside the company only.#

BHA library

The BHA page keeps assemblies across wells and imports a service company's BHA sheet from PDF. Link the assembly to the section on the survey sheet; the motor output it delivers is learned per assembly and inclination band and pooled across the fleet through the Office Server. Running an assembly on a section puts its bit to sensor on the survey sheet as that section's offset; surveys already on the section keep their depths.#

Plans and well planning

Proposal, primary plan and revisions

Import each plan PDF as its own named plan (P1, P2). Proposal has the Primary plan dropdown and Show PDF. Switching the primary plan restores that plan's stations, targets and VS direction. Interpolate shows INC, AZ, TVD, subsea TVD, N/S, E/W and VS at a measured depth on the selected plan.#

Import formation tops and targets

Import tops or targets, on the well plan page and in Job settings > Edit formations and tops, reads formation tops from a well plan PDF's Formations table or an Excel sheet, and targets from a well plan PDF, an Excel sheet, or where the plan changes - kick-off, the end of each curve, the landing and TD. The plan itself is not changed. Setting up or updating a job from a COMPASS EDM export or a well database brings in the targets it keeps for the well and its plans, and from an EDM export the plan's formation tops.#

Build a plan in Well Planning

Set a plan name, station spacing, DLS limit and VS azimuth, then add sections: vertical to kickoff, tangent hold, curve to INC/AZ at a DLS, hold to TVD or a coordinate target. Print PDF makes a planning report, Excel exports the data, Copy to Proposal saves it as a named plan.#

Anti-collision

Import offsets and AC reports

Offset wells accepts supported anti-collision PDFs and manual coordinates or angles. Check the reference well, origin and elevation datum before applying. Show imported AC report opens the saved PDF. A report may only cover part of an offset; coverage describes the available coordinates.#

Real Time AC, warnings and missing values

Real Time AC follows the selected survey and only includes offsets that are shown. Imported rows go yellow for SF below 2 or CC below 10 m, red for SF below 1 or CC below 5 m. Missing calculated values stay blank; Job settings > AC setup / missing inputs shows the reason. A missing value is not evidence of clearance. A well with no hole or casing size uses the standard 311 mm (12 1/4 in) hole by itself, with no prompt, so it never waits for inputs. To use another size, type one diameter in AC setup and press Use for every well without one; sizes already entered are kept, and 0 allows for no hole. The Real Time AC button lights red, yellow or green by the worst warning.#

Approaching limits: yellow before red

Real Time AC Warning settings take approaching limits beside the warning ones - a second SF and a second centre-to-centre, above the warning values (the standard is SF 2 and one and a half times the warning distance). Inside either of them the Real Time AC button on the survey sheet and the A/C light on the phone go yellow before the warning turns them red, and the offset's row on Real Time AC and its card on the phone's Live AC sheet say which limit it is approaching. Leave an approaching limit blank to turn it off. An SF under 1 is always red, whatever the settings.#

ISCWSA error models

Uncertainty is worked out with the ISCWSA Rev5 propagation - our own implementation of the published definition, not a copy of anyone else's program. The standard ISCWSA A001Mc MWD+SRGM Rev5 term set is built in, and a maker's own tool error file (IPM) can be loaded and used instead, per interval. Every ellipse, separation factor and closest-approach number on the survey sheet, the charts and the reports comes from that model.#

Scan a plan for collisions before it is drilled

On the Proposal page, or in the Office planner, choose Scan for collisions. Pick the path to scan - the original plan, the geosteering copy or the as-drilled well - set how far apart to check, and press Scan. It walks the path end to end and, at every step, asks the same question the survey sheet asks at one station: the lowest separation factor anywhere near here, against each offset. You get the closest approach to each offset, every step over the job warning limits, and a report to copy or save as a text file. It uses the same rule, the same sigmas and the same limits as the live answer. A path with no uncertainty model, or a job with no offsets loaded, is refused with the reason rather than scanned empty.#

Why a survey tool will not load

A survey-tool file is refused at import rather than halfway through a job. The reason is always named. A gyro tool says so: SharpShooter models stationary magnetic MWD tools, not gyro, so for a gyro run import the survey company's full one-sigma covariance export instead - that path is fully supported and gives the same anti-collision answer. A file naming a survey input the program does not supply is named too. A model marked withdrawn or provisional is refused on purpose; obtain the approved one.#

What SharpShooter reads from other programs

Well plans and surveys come in from the programs a directional office already runs: COMPASS EDM databases and COMPASS plan PDFs, anti-collision report PDFs, Excel or pasted trajectories, another SharpShooter database, WITSML servers, and EDR files from the rig recorder (Pason and the like). Nothing has to be retyped to start a job.#

Ellipses, survey tools and IPMs

Show ellipse draws uncertainty ellipsoids at the chosen sigma. Job settings > AC setup & IPM checks shows assigned tools and intervals; Assign tools from AC PDF uses the report's tool program. Office connection > Company IPMs downloads approved revisions.#

Checking AC against another program's report

Two programs can give different SF numbers for the same wells when they use different hole or casing sizes, a different margin or projection, or a different way of growing the error. SharpShooter works SF out one way on every job - SF = centre distance / MASD, ES = centre distance - MASD - so enter the casing sizes for each well and check the margin, projection and sigma match the report. Offsets from a well database are placed with the grid convergence turned into the job's north: on an older job run Update from well database once. Report-compatible propagation is only for checking numbers against a report.#

Update the whole IPM folder

Update IPM folder takes a folder or ZIP of .ipm files and asks: Overwrite all (the folder becomes exactly the new collection; models not in it move to a replaced folder, nothing is deleted) or Add and update only. Provisional and Beta models load with their status shown; only Withdrawn models are refused. Files that still cannot be used are listed with the reason.#

Reports

Survey and AC reports: PDF, Excel, CSV, TXT

Reports in the sidebar: choose Survey report or AC report, all surveys or the selected one, then PDF, EXCEL, CSV or TXT. Report columns picks the data table. Header information sets the company details and a header image (PNG or JPEG). Save as keeps a named report setup for any job.#

Daily tickets and the cost summary

Tickets > Price list: the office enters each charge (code, description, unit, rate, currency); it goes to the rig with the plan and is locked there. Tickets > Daily ticket: pick the day, add lines from the price list or type another charge, and print the ticket as a PDF - Copy the day before starts a new day from yesterday. Tickets > Cost summary totals every ticket between two days - each day, each charge and the whole - and prints as a PDF. The tickets go to the office with the surveys; the office can add or change a day too, and the copy changed last is kept.#

Tool inventory

Operations > Tool inventory. The office adds tools - a standard drilling item from the list or the company's own type - with serial, size and notes, moves them well to well, and keeps the shipping (carrier, waybill, date) and any status. A well's tools go to the rig with the plan; the rig enters their measurements and notes and marks them On location, Ready to ship or Shipped back, and that comes back with the surveys. Every change keeps a history line. With well data on the client portal, Office accounts can change tools there too.#

KPI report: speed, downtime and cost

Operations > KPI report works itself out from the rig activity, the surveys and the tickets - nothing to type. Speed: metres drilled, metres per day, ROP rotating and sliding, connections and trip speeds. Downtime: waiting plus lines coded rig repair, fishing, waiting / NPT, rig not working or well control, as hours and a share of the time (rig service is not counted). Cost: daily costs, cost per day, cost per metre and the cost of the downtime. Pick today, yesterday, the last 24 hours, the last 7 days or the whole job, then print or copy it.#

Safety meeting form

Job settings > Open safety meeting opens a form window that stays blank until your company's PDF form is imported. Fill it in; the entries are saved with the job and kept in database backups.#

Office and server

Office connection and shared jobs

Open Office connection from the three-dot menu, sign in and link the shared job. Send the latest saved surveys to the office; Office prepares the AC setup and publishes it; Field pulls it with Pull AC setup from Office in Job settings > AC setup / missing inputs.#

Office and Office Server editions

Office is town's view of the live job: review data, plan wells and run anti-collision. Office Server is the company's own server that shares jobs with office users and holds the approved IPM library. Both are supplied to companies directly - email SSDrillingtech@gmail.com.#

The full guides come with the program: Setup and Use, the Rig data feed (WITS) guide, the IPM guide and the phone app guide are in the Support / Guides folder of the download, and Help inside the program searches the Setup and Use guide page by page. Every topic above has its own address - the # at the end of a topic - so an answer can point straight at it.
